The main character and part-time narrator of this debut novel, Nezir, must learn to make his own decisions as he goes from childhood to adulthood amidst the cruelty and absurdity of war. Nezir loses his house, his neighborhood, his father, and finally, his country in the war between Serbians and Bosnians. However, his willpower and his desire to rise above hardship lead him to find the rest of his family and make a new and hopeful start. This moving story portrays human innocence in the face of savagery and destruction, but it is also paints an optimistic picture of our capacity to overcome destructive adversity, in this case unprovoked, undeserved, and incomprehensible.
