Shortly before the holiday of the Days of the Dead, the Arteaga family decides to cross the border from Mexico to the United States, as their living situation is unsustainable. Clinging to their traditions, the family members leave traces along the road so that their deceased relatives may follow them. In this way, they are able to celebrate together, once again, the holiday during which the souls of the living and the dead unite. This story, narrated simply yet endearingly, highlights the experiences and hardships of the many illegal immigrants that cross the border each day. Once they have arrived at their new “home,” these immigrants must adjust to cultural differences, including language, religion, and customs, in addition to dealing with harsh working conditions.
